Awesome Sausage

Awesome Sausage

Today is Superbowl XLIX!!!! (For those of you who don't read Roman numerals, that's 49!) Almost everyone is going to Superbowl parties. Except me! I like to stay home because I'm one of those few who like to watch the game AND the commercials.

INTERRUPT HERE: I used to have parties. We would have the living room television and the basement one on at the same time. Everyone upstairs watched the commercials and talked during the game. Everyone downstairs watched the game and talked during the commercials. I found myself running up and down the stairs all evening. (At least I burned the calories I consumed that night!!!)

But guess what! The family still has to eat! IMAGINE THAT!!!! So I've found a few recipes that give them that Superbowl food feel while not keeping me in the kitchen.

One of my hubby's favorite is Drunken Kielbasa. I make it in the crock pot with a side of white rice. (Find that recipe here!) YUM!!! But the children have commented that the taste of the bourbon was a little strong for them. So I had to come up with an alternative that would be just as good and just as easy.

2 pounds of turkey sausage (or your favorite)
1/4 cup of your favorite bourbon (optional- I just like the flavor! As a substitute, you can use 1/2 Tbsp each of nonalcoholic vanilla and almond extract)
3/4 cup of cola
1 cup of salsa (we use medium because the baby can't do too hot. But feel free to use your favorite!)
3/4 cup of dark brown sugar

Cut the sausage in bite size pieces. Saute until done. Put all the ingredients in a crock pot (including the sausage drippings from the pan). Cook on high in the crock pot for 2 hours. Serve with rice or baked potatoes.

We always double the recipe because it tastes SOOOOOO much better the second day.

Enjoy!
